Plush Commodore Scrappy Black Bear Cub

Commodore Scrappy was a four-month-old black bear cub that was gifted to the crew of USS Constitution during the West Coast portion of National Cruise in 1933. He became the mascot for the crews of both USS Constitution and USS Grebe, the minesweeper that towed Constitution on the three-coast tour (1931-1934). Crew members took turns feeding Scrappy cans of condensed milk and let him swim in the various harbors the Ship stopped at. Commodore Scrappy was eventually rehomed at the San Diego Zoo in late-1933 when he became too large to safely remain onboard.
